Veterans day is on November 11th. We take this day to celebrate and honor our veterans that had bravery and love for our country. They sacrificed themselves so that we could be free. The first celebration of Veterans Day occurred in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1947. Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran, organized "National Veterans Day," and this event includes parades and other festivities. The event used to be called Armistice Day until it was changed in 1954. Many veterans don’t get noticed on Veterans Day because they can’t get out to be with their families, friends, or people in their community. Many women and men have fought to keep our country safe. As a society, it is important to reach out to the people in our communities that have done service for our country because they need to know that we appreciate them.
As Hagerman High School students, we try to reach out to our veterans so that we can show our support and appreciation. We create signs and decorate the halls during the week. Each year we hold a parade in front of our school. Every student has a flag or is holding a sign. Then the veterans can drive by to see that we are there to support them. Mr. Knapp, our agriscience teacher, has some of his students create gifts for the veterans that symbolizes our appreciation. They will receive these gifts at the end of the parade.
