Introduction
New Changes - As we come back to school this year, we have noticed a lot of new changes in the school. They have changed the bell schedule; they now have the jr. high and high school students split up this year. They have also added in a 25 minute period where there is advisory before lunch for the high school and after lunch for the jr. high. During these advisory periods, we talk about what will be coming up during the school year; for example, Homecoming or we will read. The school has also painted the gym doors and they are working on painting the doors, windows around the school. We also have a lot of new students. We are all getting used to all of the changes, but these changes are helping the school become a better school and have a better school spirit.
Dual Credit - Our school offers lots of dual credit classes such as, English 101, Biology 100, Math 123 and 143, etc. The teachers at this school have been working extremely hard to provide us with many opportunities to help with our education as a highschool student. They push us to become better students by lifting us up and encouraging us to take college classes to become closer to our dream/career that we want to proceed.
Sports - Most of the sports at this school have already started but we offer Football, Volleyball, Track, Cross - Country, Basketball, Golf, and Cheer. These sports are offered to the Highschool and Jr. High.
Interviews
We interviewed one new student (Timmy Mikolyski), a senior (Dalli Elison), and one of our teachers (Mrs. Maki).
Our first interview was with Dalli Elison, we had six questions for her : We started off by asking her what she was looking forward to this year, she responded with “meeting new people and trying to make the best of it for my last year”. We proceeded with our second question, what should we change for better school spirit? She responded with “ having the junior high together with the high school to feel united”. The next question was “ What would you tell someone who is thinking about coming here? Her answer was “ We have a lot of dual credit, and we push people to be united and have better friendships”. Our school is also very small so everyone knows everyone, sometimes it can be a good thing and sometimes it can be a bad thing. As we look at our sports here in Hagerman we ask Dalli “ Do you do any kind of sports, if so which ones?” Her answer was pretty accurate for us, knowing that she loves being active “ all the above!” Our school has many different sports like volleyball, cross-country, track, and basketball. Since we wanted to know more about her we asked her “ How long have you been going to school in Hagerman High?” She answered “ 3 ½ years in Hagerman”. Since she has been here for three years we asked her “ What do you like about this school?” She answered “ We include everybody into our assemblies”. Our school tries to make sure everyone gets to have fun, to feel like they are part of something big. Our last question is “ From going to school here so far, how has your experience been here in Hagerman?” Her answer was “ People are rude, friendships are important, and try your hardest.” That was our last question for Dalli, we thanked her for her time.
Our second interview was with Timmy Mikolyski, we asked him our first question: What are you looking forward to this year? His answer was “How to weld”. Since he is new to the school we asked him “ What should we change for better school spirit?” His response was “A lot less cursing, and get people more engaged”. We asked him “what would you tell someone who is thinking about coming to Hagerman High School?’’ His response was pretty funny, “math i don't like so be prepared, and the teachers are nice”. I think it's nice to know that the new kids like the teachers and how nice they are. As we asked Dalli about sports we asked Timmy the same question, “ What kind of sports do you like to play?” Timmy said “ I like to play basketball”. Since he is a new student we asked him “ What do you like about Hagerman High School?” He told us “That it is a small school, and that we also have good classes”. We asked him a few more questions to get to know him better were “ From going to school here so far, how has your experience been?” As he told us his answer we had found out something new about him “ pretty good, better than homeschool”.
Our last interview was with a teacher, Mrs. Maki. We also had six questions for her: We started off by asking her “ How many years have you taught in Hagerman High School?” She answered “ two years”. Our second question that we asked was “ what do you teach?” Mrs. Maki answered “ I teach all kinds of math”. As a teacher we asked her “what do you want better for this school?” Her answer was “ I want more kids to fall in love with learning and reach higher than they think they can, and reach their goals”. Next question was “ What inspired you to become a teacher?” She answered with “ I love giving knowledge to others”. As a new teacher we asked her what she would say to a student who would want to come here? Her response was “ They wouldn't find another staff that is more caring and loving to the students”. Our last question was what quote inspires you daily? “ You can do anything you want, if you put your mind to it” - from Monsters Inc.
